Music & Performing Arts
At Harvest, students have the opportunity to engage in musical activities such as performing, composing, arranging, researching, developing and applying music technologies. Participation in the study of music draws together students’ cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills, strengthening their ability to manage work and learning, and to communicate effectively and sensitively.
Music & Performing Arts
At Harvest, we offer vibrant, engaging lessons in Art, Music, Drama and Dance.
Students are hands-on in music-making, singing, developing musical literacy, playing in class ensembles and deepening all learning by the rich literacy and maths content.
Drama is taught to develop empathy, confidence, essential life skills, teamwork, trust and joy with a robust literature and literacy focus.
Primary students can join musical groups such as a choir or percussion ensemble. These groups perform at various events throughout the year, such as assemblies, chapels, presentation nights, Kernewek Lowender and other celebrations.
Secondary students continue with class music lessons in Year 7 and then have the option of choosing this subject in higher year levels.
A secondary vocal ensemble is available for those students who enjoy singing and performing, and they sing at various events.
Lunchtime music groups, including guitar and ukulele groups, are open for any interested students. A student band also rehearses at lunchtime.
Private instrumental lessons are available in our music studios. We currently provide piano, violin, viola, and cello lessons as options for private lessons.
We are a Festival of Music school
Harvest Christian College participates in the Festival of Music each year. Students from our school have been involved in many ways. Along with our school choir performing in the Festival of Music concert series, we have also had students serve as soloists, guest artists, and hosts.
The Primary Schools Music Festival presents the Festival of Music in South Australia annually and is recognised as a state heritage icon. This choral program has a longstanding tradition that has impacted generations of students across South Australia.
It is a highly valued part of the school curriculum here at Harvest Christian College. Students and families look forward to taking part every year. It stands at the forefront of arts education in South Australia.
The Festival of Music reflects our commitment to promoting the importance of music and the arts in education and to engaging our school community. It plays a vital role in nurturing young talent, fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity, and preserving and building South Australia’s musical landscape and history.
The positive benefits of maintaining a culture of choir and singing at Harvest Christian College unequivocally foster the magic of social connection, belonging and teamwork, strengthen body posture, develop lung function, and help blood pressure (wellbeing), improve literacy skills (excellence and equity, effective learners), along with many more benefits that enable students to thrive and prosper!
The Festival of Music provides our school with a program that connects us to our shared humanity. As a regional event performing at the Port Pirie Northern Festival Theatre each September, we also build stronger connections to local schools and communities.
